Fill with a descaling solution
Use one of three options: a capful of a universal descaler like Durgol, one to two tablespoons of food-grade citric acid, or a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water. Fill the kettle about halfway so the solution covers the scale line.
Boil, then let it sit
Bring the solution to a boil, switch off the heat, and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. The acid dissolves the mineral scale while it soaks — no scrubbing required. For heavy buildup, repeat the soak.
Scrub lightly and rinse thoroughly
Tip out the solution. Wipe any loosened residue with a non-abrasive sponge (never steel wool on a kettle interior). Rinse two or three times with clean water to remove all taste of the descaler.
Boil one more batch of plain water and discard

All three descaling options on this page work by dissolving that carbonate with acid, but they behave differently. Kettle-by-kettle differences: electric, glass, enamel, copper, and the one you should never descale
The generic method needs adjusting for the kettle in front of you. Electric kettles with a concealed flat plate scale on that plate, and the fix is exactly what this page describes; older models with an exposed coil element trap scale in the coils, and you'll need a second soak and a soft brush to clear them. Never submerge an electric kettle's base or let descaler run into the power contacts — fill only to the scale line, and wipe the exterior rather than rinsing it under a tap. Glass kettles make scale visible, which is a feature: a haze that returns within a week is your signal that the water needs filtering. Plastic components and rubber seals tolerate citric acid well; prolonged vinegar soaks can leave them smelling for days, so keep the soak to the recommended time.
Stovetop kettles bring their own quirks. Enameled steel kettles chip if you scrub the interior with anything abrasive, and a chip on the inside exposes steel that rusts, so use only a soft sponge inside them. Whistling kettles trap scale in the spout cap where it can block the whistle; unscrew or pop off the cap and soak it separately. Beyond limescale: heat tint, rust spots, musty lids, and the metallic-taste problem
A clean interior doesn't mean the kettle looks clean. Two problems live outside the water chamber.
